Wheel spin?

Just been out on a quick loop which involves a steep 20% climb up a nearby fell. Getting to the steep incline, every time I put the power down on my left side the back wheel spun, slightly losing a bit of momentum every time. The road was a bit damp but Ive never had this problem apart from on icy roads.

Bike problem or technique problem?

Technique, you need to position yourself more over the back wheel. Hard when climbing but that will be the cure.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

Definitely technique. As a mud-lover I'm well aware of this problem!
Try shifting more of your weight rearwards. I often find that sitting right on the nose of the saddle will allow for traction even on incredibly steep climbs.
