To be honest, the surprise to me is that it's only 23 out of 854 riders. Excuse me if I'm being naive, but given the last few years I think that's a result of sorts.

    Somebody put me straight...

There will be no disciplinary proceedings as the tests are not recognised dope tests

They might have been if someone didn't decided to sue Dick Pound.

And 11 other riders for standard violations?

    Excellent, he's back! I knew it couldn't last :D

Though such a low number is a result of sorts, I'd say.

Think this is the interesting bit:
Gripper told a news conference that the UCI was pursuing five suspected doping cases following traditional anti-doping tests on riders, either during races or out-of-competition.

Isn't that what they said last May/June time, and we ended up with Vino et al eventually being caught?

Also of the 23 riders "needing further examination", one or two I suppose could be because the testing has flagged up they that may have a naturally high level or something.

These 854 riders then, is that all the 'ProTour' and Pro-Continental riders?

so i suppose we can say that we are surprised? the big five are the more interesting really i think...

these guys must be suspects for a while..

you would think that the peleton would have got rid of this problem by now?

its always crops up this time of the year with the ever efficient uci decide - " oh suspect blood valves" - must see someone about this..they were proberly left over(the samples themselves) from last years bad crop..i would not be surprised!

    politics,politics,uci,aso,giro,tour,etc,ctc,epo....

    Hmmmm

According to the news agency Reuters, UCI anti-doping chief Anne Gripper said in a press conference that 1,500 blood samples from 854 riders had been analysed since January.

That's 1.75 tests per athlete since January. I wonder how they're showing up variations - less than 2 tests is not going to give you anything statistically meaningful? Also, didn't the UCI always check 4 blood samples per year so is this anything new?

One test for 90% of the athletes and lots of tests for the suspect rest?

The French Federation has checked at least 4 blood samples a year of French registered riders ever since Festina but not the UCI, I think

    Now ...........................

Are there actually any facts here?

Or is this simply scaremongering to raise the profile of the testers?

    Just a suggestion.....

If this was haematocrit testing of the general public then the official limit is 50%, then some 5% would fail as for various reasons they would be above this limit.

Why do we accept such poor reporting when it comes to drugs in sport?

The general public will remember "23 dodgy tests", but will not remember that most of these will b explaiined rationally and be groundless. The whole ethos of panic reporting is bad for cycling as a sport

Not quite. The UCI called the press conference, presented the experts who are looking at the results (and there are some heavy weight anti-doping experts in there) and what's they've said is being report. The 23 suspect riders are probably not HCT over 50% but something else - It's not 2001 anymore

In the report on Cyclingnews this morning, it has this interesting titbit in the second para:
There were 23 riders who "warranted further scrutiny" due to unusual patterns in blood or urine profiles. Of those, one rider is expected to be sanctioned, while four others are also facing potential bans.

No information of when this is likely to take place, or any further clues apart from CN titling the article, Top rider under suspicion from passport data, but that could mean anything. So interesting developments ahead, or are the UCI just trying to put the wind up certain riders, by hinting we're onto you sonny.

Also I note is says "Of the 2,172 samples collected from riders since the beginning of the programme". So is that 1,500 from the start of Jan, but they're using results from another 600+ tests done presumably at the tail end of '07 as well to give some sort of longitudinal aspect to it, or can someone in Aigle just not count?

Maybe Tyler Hamilton is one of the 23 and the UCI will try to put him away for good?

Yes, because he's been performing well, coming in the last 10 in Georgia and all.
