Clanking noise when pedalling

I wonder if anyone might have an idea as to what is causing a clanking noise when I pedal on my 6 month old road bike? It seems to be coming from the crank area, or the pedals. It is most noticeable when standing or pushing hard on the pedals.

I first noticed it a few months ago after a bad patch of wet weather. It was intermittent so wasn't too concerned. After a good wash, degrease and regrease the noise seemed to stop and everything was running smoothly again. However after going out on Weds night and getting a good soaking the clanking/knocking sound has started again.

Is this to be expected after cycling in bad conditions? Or could it be something else a little more serious?

(Bike is a Bianchi 1885 Veloce, and is a few months old).

Thank you!

Can't really help from the discription, but if the bkie is only 6 months old, take it back to the supplier.

First, what are you lubing the chain with ?
My guess would be water washing the lube out of the chain so it is noisy after a wet ride.
I would remove the chain, clean in white spirit and dry thoroughly. Then refit and lube well with 3 in 1 oil or one of the other high tech lubes like Prolink Gold or similar.

(Belated) thanks for the suggestions guys. I have a feeling that some grit is getting in somewhere - I do degrease the chain and re-oil with Finish Line Wet Lube which does help.

I've had a couple of other suggestions. It could be some grit getting into the seat post, or the saddle making the noise, although I've discounted these as I'm getting noise when out of the saddle. He even thought the cables could need replacing. Someone else (who also runs Veloce on a Bianchi) suggested tightening up various bolts etc.

I think I'll just give the whole bike a good clean and clearout, and tighten anything that looks like it can be tightened!

    Thanks again.
