Cassette slipping when pedalling - what is the cause

I have had a problem with gears slipping and jumping but another alarming problem has occurred a couple of times - the cassette will just turn round when I pedal without turning the back wheel!
Is this the freehub at fault? The chain is meshing fine with cogs and jockey wheels.
The chain and cassette are new so there is no question of a problem there.
It has happened out of the saddle going uphill and is alarming to say the least.
:o

    Please expand on this

Why would it happen once then fix itself?
    Does something need tightening?

Definitely your freehub - if its on its way out it's never going to get better - it'll just stop working and it'll be a long walk home. Get it soted sooner rather than later.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

This exact problem happened on my gf's mtb, but in that case it was only the freehub budy that had gone.

We had correct tools, and got the part from our lbs for the princely sum of £11.99.

    Problem sorted :D

As mentioned, pretty dangerous, if it spins out on a r'bout, so get it sorted asap.

No - it is my training bike with a Powertap SL hub so even more expensive!

The same thing happened to me just after christmas, 06.30 on a dark morning, middle of nowhere, went round a bend and suddenly everything stopped, legs were moving but bike wasn,t. Had a nice walk and push home about 5 mile.Chain slipped a couple of times that morning and then it went alltogether. Lucky i wear MTB shoes to work or i would have really been in the s@@t. As above members have said get it fixed. greetings Ademort
