road bikes for less than £1k with rack mounts

I fancy a road bike through cycle scheme and would have got a planet x or equivalent however, it would be really nice to have something that could take a rack for some light touring. It would mainly be used without the rack for road riding, fitness and maybe a sportive or two but it would be nice to take it on a week tour of wales or similar as well.
There doesn't seem much between the full on tourers from the Like of Dawes and Cannondale and the road racing bikes without rack mounts. Have I missed something? Any good suggestions?

I have a Kinesis Racelight Tk08 which has both mudguard and rear carrier eyes. I built my bike myself but Epic Cycles sell complete bikes (I think there's a review here somewhere).

It's a very good frame. I'm delighted with mine and I'm looking forward to some decent rides in Spain and France in May and June.
GeoffOld cyclists never die; they just fit smaller chainrings ... and pedal faster0 -

Would that suit what you're after?
Not really. I've already got an il pompino which can be used off road. I'm after modern road bike geometry and features that happen to take a rack.andyp wrote:
A guy at work has a fratello which looks just the sort of thing. I thought they would be out of budget but it appears not. Thanks!geoff wrote:I have a Kinesis Racelight Tk08 which has both mudguard and rear carrier eyes. I built my bike myself but Epic Cycles sell complete bikes (I think there's a review here somewhere).

That looks the sort of thing! I wasn't clear if I could get one for < £1k though. Time to do some research!
My wife's Tek 1.2 WSD has them but they only appear on the very cheapest frame.[/quote]0 -
Rack mounts seem quite popular on entry level road bikes (Trek 1.2 and Specialized Allez), however they disappear as soon as the spec increases. i.e no rack mounts on an Allez sport or Trek 1.5 - weird. I would have thought they would all be the same frame?
Genesis (Ridgeback) sell exactly the sort of thing I want: http://www.cyclesurgery.com/ProductDetails/mcs/productID/1026742/groupID/7/categoryID/107/v/7dfa2d77-4b65-457c-866f-ad5d4141fcd9 But it's £200 too expensive.0 -
How about Giant SCR 1.0???0

My trek 1000 has rack mounts that I 've used with a tubus rack (fly) for long day jaunts and would certainly tolerate light touring.0

As someone has already said the Kinesis Racelight TK is a good choice. Nice bike to ride and well made. Cycling Plus gave it a very good review as a bike that can do most things well. There's a frame on ebay at the moment.

Ribble audax/winter trainer
Dawes Audax
Spesh Tricross
Then you've got audax type bikes from people like Hewitt cycles.
There are probably lots more with mudguard fixings which you could use with p-clips for racks i.e. Pinnacle, Giant SCR range.
Personally, I'd like to see all but the full on race bikes fitted with mudguard and rack mounts.0 -
+1 for Racelight Tk -- they're a beautiful ride0
