triple left hand lever with double chainset
possibly a daft question
I need to replace my sora left hand lever and I want to upgrade many things but in the main to a triple chainset eventually. Is it possible to run a triple LH ,lever with a double chainset (until I can afford the triple CR)
any help would be appreaciated
cheers
steve

If I'm not mistaken, my Campy Record 10 lever was triple-ready, although I was running a double at the time... shifting was never an issue....a few years later, I changed to the Record 10 (compact) triple: 30/40/50 and been loving it ever since..Cajun0

My Allez has a triple shifter and a double CR, it came that way...This is why!0

All Campag levers do both Triple and Double as standard.0 -

Is that why I have to click twice when changing down?0 -

It's not necessarily wrong. I use it as a trimming position to allow me to use more of the cassette with the big Chainring.0 -
The OP is talking about replacing a Sora left shifter, so all the answers about Campag aren't a lot of use.
I guess it depends on what you're intending upgrading to.
I don't know about Sora, don't know if there is a different shifter for double or triple.
Tiagra will do both.
9sp 105 and Ultegra (st-6510) will do both
10sp 105 will, but there are different front shifters for 10sp Ultegra.
So the answer is...it depends what you're upgrading or replacing !0 -
their is a triple lh lever for sora's I now have it. Im only going to use as interim measure untill I upgrade all to triple. Im going to fit it tomorrow. So ill report back
thanks again for the advice

Just depends on the stops/indexing surely? I'm running a Deore mtb triple shifter with a Campag road double c'set and Campag front mech. Works fine.d.j.

Sora triple will not work with a double and vice versa. I run all sorts of mixes but this one will not work. Are you after a left hand double lever ?0
-
Just curious, I have Tiagra shifters, so if I wanted to change the chain set from a compact to a tripple would it just be a matter of switching the chainset and adjusting the H/L screws to make it work?0
-
I see no reason why a triple sora shifter wont work a double chainset. I changed my ultegra from a triple to a double, and just needed to adjust the stop screws on the front derailieur.
Is that the 8 speed sora? if your sticking with the 8 speed setup, then when you replace the levers go for the R500's, they are much better.0 -
105 and Ultegra are designed to work double or triple, sora are not, it is to do with the trimming on the double lever and lack of trimming on the triple.0

Previous years’ 8sp Sora (3300) has different double & triple shifters
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=13639
But 9sp (current 3400 model) now appears to do both
http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/product-Shim ... -15627.htm
---
9sp Tiagra (4500 – current model) will do both
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=22652
105 (current 5600 model)will do both
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=13646
As would old 9sp 5510 model
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=13660
But Ultegra (current 6600-series) has different double & triple
ST-6600 double http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=25036
ST6603 triple http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=27555
However, the old-model 9sp Ultegra would do both double & triple
ST-6510 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=13636

Certainly there was no trimming feature on 8sp Sora triple shifters - and they did specifically say Triple on them.
I have since replaced them with 9sp Ultegra ST-6510, which came off a friend's double bike so I know they work on both, and they don't say Double or Triple.
But my 10sp Ultegra ST-6600 on my Summer bike do specifically say Double again0 -
For what it's worth, I had to replace my BB and I took the opportunity to upgrade my Sora 8 spd triple to a double.
I replaced the BB and chainset as appropriate but kept the current triple levers, and after quite a bit of fiddling with cable tension and the low/high adjusters I've got it all working just fine.
So it can be done!0
