MTB / hybrid buying advice

Hello, my Dad is after a new bike for his 60th birthday. He wants something good for doing medium distance rides offroad on bridle paths, with a bit of road cycling as well. Budget probably up to £250. Would be grateful for a few recommendations on what hybrid / hardtail might fit the bill?
