What bike should I get for £400 ???

Please help me make a decision.
I want to start riding a bike again after 3 or 4 years of being a lazy person and using my car. I want to do trail riding and some light xc riding, I don't want to jump off rocks or go hurtling down a hill at 40 mph.
I was looking at the specialized hardrock pro08 which I can get from my local dealer for £400 (probably knock that down after buying other things needed). I really don't know what bike to go for. I will eventually start demanding more from my bike so maybe I will end up going on some hard trails, I live in Exeter,Devon so my closet decent xc is at Haldon Woods or Stoke Woods.
Any advice would be appreciated !
Thanks

Bit of a novice myself mate, so not sure... but I think maybe some other bikes in that price bracket come with hydraulic disc brakes that you could consider.... maybe the other parts make up for that though.....0

Yeah, I really havent got a clue, I might just go to the local cycle shop and see what he says, The blokes been around for years and i've heard about him even before I thought of getting a bike, (Richards Bikes in exeter).0

Have a read of the What Bike thread for ideas.0

Yeah thanks, I did, And now I don't know if I should go for hydraulic brakes or not. , Guess I will just have to go and take a look for myself0

Yeah, try a few out, see how they feel. Try and get the best fork you can - something damped.
The 07 Hardrock Pro is very heavy, and poorly specced.0 -
What about the hardrock pro 08 ?0

Its 150 quid cheaper than the 08, but for the money better value. One to try, but I do think there are better bikes about.0

What one would you recommend ?0

GT Avalanche 2.0 ticks all the right boxes - top quality frame, damped suspension, hydro discs and Shimano drivetrain.0

Thanks, I'll take a look on the web at it
(Edit..Reviews dont seem to great for that bike ?)0 -
Giant Terrago.Might also find a 2007 Giant XTC SE.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
Scott Aspect 45 is also worth a look, but the Giant does beat it VFM."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
