Is a ten speed wheel compatible with a 9 speed cassette?

I want to buy a pair of Mavic Aksium clinchers, I've got a 9 speed Shimano cassette and want to know if I can just use a spacer?

Cheers

You won't need a spacer, 9 speed is wider than 10 speed (you need a spacer for 10 speed though.). Just whack the cassette on.

I had to use the supplied spacer to run a 9-speed Ultegra cassette on a set of Shimano splined Aksiums. :?

Good point - don't Mavic need an extra spacer (as well as the normal 10 speed one)?

It's simple with Campag - no faffing about with Spacers.

The Shimano-fit hub on Ksyriums (and presumably Aksiums too ?) is 'M10' - i.e. Mavic 10-speed.
It allows you to fit Shimano cassettes, or alternatively Mavic also make a Shimano-splined but Campag-spaced cassette which fits it, allowing you to use a M10 wheel on either Shimano or Campag.

The Campag cassette is wider than Shimano, so Mavic supply a spacer (thickish washer, 2 or 3mm) which you need to fit Shimano cassettes but don't need for the Mavic-Campag one.

A Shimano 10sp cassette is narrower than 8sp or 9sp, so Shimano supply a (thinner, 1-and-a-bit mm) spacer with 10sp cassettes.

If fitting Shimano 8sp or 9sp on a M10 hub, you need the thicker spacer from Mavic
If fitting Shimano 10sp on a M10 hub, you need the thicker spacer from Mavic plus the thinner one from Shimano
If fitting the Mavic-Campag cassette on a M10 hub, you don't need any spacers
