Wing handlebars and tape

Am thinking about getting some FSA wing pro handlebars to do some sportives and a bit of racing- are they any good? Next question - where do you take the handlebar tape to? Does it go over the wing or not? I'm obviously keen not to avoid any faux pas!

Advice gratefully received.

I've got the alloy ones with the compact bend and love them. The smaller drop, easier reach and flat top all combine to make this one of the best handlebars IMHO.

I taped the wing section and would advise you to do them same in the interest of comfort for sportives, but then again if it was the carbon version I might just be tempted to leave them bare 8)

PS I paired them up with the new FSA OS-99 stem and think they look great on my red and black Roubaix

I taped my wing bars all the way.

  • I had cheap wing bars on a bike a while back. But as I spend a lot of time on the bar tops, I didn't really get on with them. I taped the whole bar, but was aware at the time that that's not really the done thing.

Mine are only taped just past the brake lever, but it's really just a matter of choice and need for additional comfort.

Got some ITM Swords. Leave the flat bit untaped, feels very comfortable and looks good.

  • I think it's just personal preference. I had my previous wing bars taped to the centre, but my new Cinelli bars are shaped so nicely that there is no need.

Agreed. In fact when I (first) taped them I was disappointed that they weren't comfortable. I think that the Cinelli Ram bars are designed to be used bare.
