I rode the route (well most of it - Tilff-Bastogne-Tilff sportif) at end of May last year.

Milky sunshine and warm in Liege at 5am when we left the hotel - by the time we got to Bastogne we were considering getting the train back as we'd been riding in cold rain for 4 hours. When we got back to Liege it was sunny and 17° again.

What little I could see of the Ardennes countryside through the low clouds looked very pretty though.

    Hi there.

That article just doesn't read right, it doesn't flow at all. My guess is that cyclingnews asked for 200 words for an article and they edited down a section of one of Les's books.

    Cheers, Andy

Ride L-B-L hard and it's a real leg-breaker - the ups and down are unrelenting with relatively little flat for recovery. Last year's T-B-T sportive was a wash-out but I have ridden it in the dry - the roads are quiet, drivers considerate and makes for excellent cycling - the Ardennes are beautiful cycling country and deceptively hilly - the longer climbs are a few km at a time and can have some really steep sections - 15-20% is not unusual - La Redoute is a killer at 200km.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
