Can anyone recommend some non-lycra mountain bike trousers?

I'm fairly new to mountain biking and I've yet to come to terms with the idea of wearing lycra trousers!

I'm after some good quality full length trousers that are breathable, not too heavy and not too tight fitting to do some XC in.

Any recommendations people?

It's all about the shorts!! Get those legs pumping and they'll keep themselves warm!!

there's endura humvee shorts as well. They come with lycra shorts as well to wear underneath (useful for the padding they give you) and then the 'regular' short is on the outside so you look relatively normal!
  • The Humvees look good, I've also been recommended these: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360029514&N=Endura%20Singletrack%20Trouser

Think I prefer the look of the Humvees.

I bought a pair of the humvee shorts the other day from one of my locals...and I must say they are damn fine!
  • As I'm new to all this MTB lark..

What difference will I see between using my standard breathable Helly Hansen trousers, that tie at the ankle, and a pair of bike-specific trousers or shorts like the Humvee?

Ross - I do a daily 10 miler and wear normal boardshorts (surfing type) when it's warm and Nike tracksuit bottoms (I use them for running too) when it's colder.
If it chucks it down I have some Regatta breathable waterproofs.

I looked at cycle specific gear and saw no advantage whatsover - I'll spend money if needed but not if something I already have does the job fine. I tried the Humvees - 3/4 length shorts are not a good look IMO! Jackets and gloves need to be cycle specific but not shorts/trousers.

I'd stick the the HH trousers as long as they won't snag in the chainring.
