Getting a replacement 6 speed freewheel and chain for my dads bike, now the chain i was looking at was a shimano HG40 6-8 Speed Chain but my question is seen as it states its a 6-8 speed chain would i then be able to use any 8 speed chain ?

OK cheers, does that apply to 6,7 and 8 speeds ? i.e. a 8 speed chain will work on a 6 and 7 speed and a 7 speed chain will work on a 6 speed ?0

They are all the same. Its only really old 5 and 6spd stuff that are a little different. I'd recommend the SRAM PC 58 chain, or PC 870.0

Cheers for the info, was actually looking at this SRAM PC 830 8sp, this KMC Z51 RB Chain Anti Rust 7 Speed and the Shimano one i first listed as they are all under a 10'er, i know cheaper is not always better but it's a really old bike that site's it the garden, is really only used to go back and forth on short journeys and only really has to last until my dad gets some other parts for another bike i am going to put together0

just to confirm the above. you should be fine for most situations BUT there are the odd 6spd "block" that can struggle with an 8spd chain....."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Apart from once the chain is on how would i know which may struggle with a 8 speed chain? oh the freewheel i will be getting is a Shimano HG22 6 Speed.0

It will be fine! Its only more obscure ones, and old old stuff that don't (and by that, they skip).0
