Old rider, new bike...

Hey all,
I'm new to the forums and was wondering if any of you could help me out, I used to ride all the time and did a lot of off road on my old mountain bike, that was back when i was a kid, I'm now 21 and have no bike.
I am looking into buying a new bike to go out adventuring with my mates, the problem is biking has changed soo much since i was last riding, for example i can't remember there being suspension bikes for me to chose when i first got my bike.
So now for me its a little bit confusing, i have had most of the details sorted by my mates, and decided for a hard tail, however my main issue isnt what to chose its what money to spend? At first i wanted to budget to £200 - £300 but after looking around i may be able to stretch this to at most £600
I wanted to know if it is best to go for the £500+ bikes or save my self some money and go for the cheaper range of bike, obviously i am aware that the more money you spend the better quality (not always the case) but i was looking at the following for a cheap option:
http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70060
This is labeled as an entry level bike by some of my mates, is it worth waiting back a while and going for a £500 ish bike instead? because i have been told that the cheaper one will be fine when you start to upgrade, but i thought it would be better in the long run to buy a higher quality one, I believe i have it right but i just need a bit of guidance,
Thanks!

If you have the money, spend it! 300 quid buys you a capable machine - 400 quid and things tka e step forward, with some offering hydro brakes and better forks. 500 and those forks get better, and often the fork makes or breaks a budget bike. 600 and weight comes down, parts get better and last longer. The Hardrock is OK, but much better to be had for a few more quid.
Check out the What Bike thread for some ideas. Best to go and check a few out in the flesh.0 -
Hi
I am 30 and started to get into mountain biking about 8 months ago. I initially hired a bike at Glentress and then immediately got hooked. I went out right away and bought a 2007 Spec hardrock sport.
I upgraded the front forks on it after a few weeks as the RST ones on it were crap and on top of that dangerous (not helped by my riding of course) I really like the bike but you get what you pay for.
I have now upgraded to a nice commencal 5.5 xt which is magic. I personally would maybe spend the extra money on getting something which will last you a little longer.
Dont know if this helps or not

Thanks guys!
Well i have plans to visit a local Evans within the next couple of weeks so i will get to physically interact with some of my choices, in the end i believe that i would go for as much as i can afford.
Over time i think i would see a lot more difference than just a quick ride of each, Well its going to be a little more than i thought but i guess its worth that little bit extra to avoid disappointment, I'll have a proper look before i fully decide though, thanks again guys!0 -
A good bike if you can stretch to £470 is the focus fatboy. These are imported by Wiggle.
I got my wife one a few months ago and it is a cracking bike with decent components for the price. Rockshox Dart 2 fork, Shimano XT rear mech, Continental Mountain King tires and Magura brakes.
Very nice and well worth considering. The only funny thing I found was the flat bars. I much prefer Riser bars. These can be changed for not much at all.
Well worth considering. Only problem is you cant really try before you buy. Dont think you would be dissapointed though.
