do you need a chain whip to remove a cassette or can it just be done with the cassette tool? I guess it would make life easier but dunno if its necessary?

It can be done without a chain whip, but it's a lot harder.

The best way would be to get a good strong rag to wrap around the cassette to hold it still while you unscrew the locking. This method may destroy your hand if you don't get it right though - so I recommend waiting until you've got your chain whip.

I use an old bit of chain wrapped round one of the larger cogs and held with mole grips. Too mean to buy a chain whip :!:

Buy a chain whip. However if you are writing this post in the middle of the jungle with the closest bike shop 300 miles away then follow reddragons instructions and hope there is an a&e closer than the bike shop
