when you are out on your own just on a normal ride does anyone see another rider ahead and target them to catch and pass? :D
or have you been passed whilst giving it some and tried to pull the gap back in? :D
am i alone in this mentality or are there others?

  • All the time, but on a couple of my favourite road routes the only other cyclists I meet are on road bikes, I have a bit of trouble keeping up!

Yep indeed so and even better when you tell the lightening XC guys

I agree with Homer Simpson -

    I'm competative with myself

I push myself to the point of not being able to walk for a few minutes when I get home when I go out on my own !

So I must be wierder than you lot

Yep been there and done it

My excuse to myself is that it helps me judge my fitness levels .

And its even better when I merk a younger rider up a long climb - Makes you forget how old you are :P.

But it does kill in the end because I always push it to make sure they never get back past me.

its inherent in all bikers i feel. its good for fitness as it makes you go faster and its good for your pride. it works the other way too, if i see someone slowly gaining on me ill always push it to try and get away from them....doesnt always work though

Always... The closer to work i get the more cyclists i see going the same way and the harder i pedal to overtake them  I was hoping to grow out of it but i don't think its likely! Not so much on the trails though as I rarely see anyone other than the people i'm riding with!
  • When you wear lycra on your commute, you have to overtake everyone. It's the rules.

Yup, I chase people on the trails every time I go out :D The worst thing is when you rag yourself stupid catching them, then they move to let you by, followed by pootling along at 5mph recovering :S

The more expensive their bike the more satisfying it is, very sad I know

I know its shallow but even out on a leisurely ride with the girlfriend the other day i wouldnt let her go in front.

Every time she tried to cycle past... id pedal that little harder so she couldnt ha h aha :D

The only people i decide to chase and keep up with is any nice ladies on the trails with a nice bum.

the rest can do what the hell they like! cos im gonna pootle along at my own pace. thats my winning attitude hehe

Got caught by a roadie riding home after a little XC.

When I continued to ride with him (he wasn't going to actually pass me!), he commented how he been trying for ages to catch me.

I love roadie chasing on my ride into work, its what keeps me fit.

Advantage I have, is that when I get near Greenwich the road surface suddenly deteriorates all the way into London, so the guys on their skinny wheels have to do some serious avoidance riding! I fly straight over the bumps/ruts and can happily keep up then!

    Always!

I will definitely chase anyone down, but will only overtake if i'm pretty sure i can pull away - this usually results in a fast chase, a mile or so of resting and evaluating, then a subtle sprint away (to make it look like i always travel at that speed) for as long as i can maintain!

It's very sad but still happens every time....

    lol

    lol

roadieeeeeeeeeee chasing that reminds on morning last year on my way home from work i see a lycra clad roadieeeeeee on his super carbon bike he pulled out about 100 metre up the road looked at me in my high vis cycling gear laughed then shot off i chased him down caught up with him and stayed with him. he kept looking back over his shoulder changing up his gears out of the saddle trying to blitz me i just stayed slipp streaming him the look on his face as he couldnt shake me was priceless then he turned off down a country lane

made me feel good though keeping up with a super fit lycra glad roadieeeeeeeeeeeee im glad he turned off when he did cause i dont know how long i could hold his pace and we all know that backing off into submission aint an option its torture all the way.

I suffer from the 'catch and destroy' bug so severly i think i am possesed! I really struggle to ride at a relaxed pace, everything i do is 100%. As such if i see anyone ahead of me i will drill it until i have passed them. Even on Dofe gold (on a fully laden mountain bike) i had to overtake this geeza on a road bike...payed the price later, it was a hard 100km ride!

I always try to catch other cyclists on climbs. I gave up trying to catch people on descents as I had a few too many sketchy moments!
