Funny BB noise

Whilst lubing my chain I noticed that the crank was rotating with a bit of resistance and there was a funny groaning noise from the BB. Its a Shimano 105 compact setup using a Hollowtec BB. I'm not fully up to speed with whats right or not with modern BB's but in comparison with my old square taper BB on my winter hack there seems to be a lot more resistance on the hollowtec. Am I being paranoid or not?

Take the cups off and clean them meticulously. Cover with a light film of grease and reassemble. If the problem persists, buy new cups. Dura-Ace OE (ie out of box with no instructions) are available at Chain Reaction Cycles for the bargain price of around £20.

Does this mean that the BB is bu$%ered?

Not necessarily - the problem might simply be that there is grit and grime that needs removing (as opposed to the sealed bearings being shot). The best way of working this out is to do the above. If the problem persists when you have reassembled after a good clean, then yes the BB cups will likely need replacing.

There have been a few problems with outboard bearing bottom brackets when the faces of the bottom bracket shell are not perfectly parallel. Once you've cleaned everything out it would be worth going to an LBS and getting the shell faced - it won't cost very much. If it were me I'd fit new bearings too:

Then you'll know everything is as it should be.
