those little washer/nut things on presta valves...
You know, those wee things that keep the valve in place after you've inserted it through the rim.
The other night I was woken up at 5am by one of my tyres suddenly developing a fast puncture at 125psi. Turned out to have been caused by the edge of the hole through the rim digging into the rubber of the tube just where the valve is joined to it. I reckon it may have been due to over tightening of that little washer. This has happened to me once or twice before. The thing is, if you don't do them up tightly they become loose and start to rattle.
Sometimes in the past I've just thrown these things away. They are only really of use when you are attaching a pump and you don't want the valve to retract into the rim, but if the tyre is inflated this doesn't really happen and if it's flat you can push the valve from the tyre side.
So, chuck 'em or keep 'em?

Chuck 'em, along with the dust caps. Neither serve any purpose.0

I keep one in my bag, just in case I get a flat, it is a bugger to fit a mini pump without it.0
