Hello folks,

I have around £250 to spend on a bike. What is the best I can get for my money?

I do off road and on road riding, so maybe a hardtail?

If you have any suggestions I would greatly appreciate the help.

Thanks!

    Hi,

Many people have asked the same question recently: have a search through a few threads, read the What Bike thread for ideas, then maybe ask a few more Qs?
  • This may not help but just some advice... You said "maybe" a hardtail....?! Without question at this price bracket DO NOT go for a full-susser because you will find that it underperforms any hardtail within this price bracket. Also go for something with V-brakes because they will be of a better quality than any disc brakes. Go for the best frame you can get and then upgrade as you go along. Look for 2004/2005/2006 models as you will find much better deals. Look around and buy online as well as you will save much more money than buying from a retailer. Hope this helps. :D.

  • ^ thats great, always thought cheapo full sus were a bit naff... so v-brakes and upgrade along the way! sounds good to me.... Thanks for the help folks :)

Good place to start, lots of people on here own a Hardrock :) Other brands to look into would be the cheap GTs, Treks possibly, Carrera (Halfords).

The big companies offer a lot of bang for your buck and will jump in to save the day with warranties should anything break of it's own accord.

I'd try having a ride about on these if you can though, even just along a flat carpark, the sizes vary a lot between brands and although you can shift the seat up and down, fixing a short/cramped bike or too long bike can be impossible. Failing that, good luck
  • The Hardrock seems a very good place to start . Because it is built by Specialized you are guaranteed that the bike will be up to a decent enough standard and that it won't fall apart on the first trail. As Toasty said cheap GT's are worth a look and as you can but them from Halfords you may be able to get quite a few pounds worth of accessories with the bike (I did :D).
