Campag ergolevers with Shimano setup - 'shimergo ?'

Has anyone had experience of this setup - Im looking at getting a set of 10 speed veloce levers, and running them with a 8 speed rear shimano setup (XT rear mech).

Do I need to look for pre 07 levers - anyone know if the design changed somewhat to prevent mixing campag and shimano equipment ?

According to the CTC site, it is possible to get the gears to run the indexing at the rear successfully ?

On the wife's winter bike she's got Veloce 06 10sp levers , Tiagra rear mech with Shimano 8 sp cassette - works perfectly . The pull on the 10sp Campag is exactly the same as for 8sp Shimano , i.e. it's not just a botch job .

  • See Chris Judens' (CTC website) article on mixing and matching Campag & Shimano stuff - its ecellent. All you need to know there. If not look at Sheldon Browns site.

    Here's a link http://ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3946

There has only ever been one cable pull for Campag 10-speed, and very little actually changed in Campag shifting for 07 anyway.

I run it. Perfect rear shifting, with an 8spd chain. The chain is quite wide and therefore I do a fair amount of trimming at the front as a result. It didn't work so well with a 10spd chain. Maybe I'll try a 9spd chain, when the current 8spd wears out

    Why are you doing it?

FWIW, I did it so I could have Shimano disc tabbed hubs. The cheapest Campag disc tabbed hubs were much more

I bought a new XT mech, and don't think you can "hubbub" it

Finally, I've heard good reports of the Jtech shiftmate-which I didn't consider

Reason why Im considering it - I have bar end shifters at the moment, and a TA 22/32/44 chainset. To run Shimano STI's I would need to change the chainset, and prob the bottom bracket. I like the TA chainset, and also dont like the fact you cant trim shimano sti levers.

So the shimergo idea looks like the best bet to me at the moment.

So am I able to use the '07 design of levers then ???

Why would you need to change the chainset to use STIs? Chainring spacing is standardised across all brands.

As far as I understand you are not able to use mtb based ratio chainsets (22/32/44 rings) with shimano STI levers - correct me if I am wrong, as this is what it says on the ctc page about shimergo.

To use STI's I would need to swap the chainset to a 26/36/48 as a minimum - this seems a real shame as the TA chainset is such high quality.

I also much prefer the idea of being able to fine tune or trim the fron mech with campag ergolevers, as I have experienced chain rub before with STI's, this can be quite iritating after a while.

I thought that might be what you meant - in which case it's worth pointing out that whatever Chris Juden might say about how these things are supposed to work I've got an old-fashioned MTB mech working just fine with STI on my cross bike with standard cable attachment, and have also previously got a newer MTB mech working with the alternative routing.

What Campag changed between the 2006 and 2007 levers was the front shifting, with the newer ones having a different cable pull and fewer trim positions on the lower-end groupsets (called quickshift). Chorus and Record are still multi-click as before.
You may end up needing a Campag front mech to match the LH lever.

As stated, there is no problem at the rear. You'll just have to make sure the limit stops on the rear mech are set properly so the spare clicks don't shift the chain off the cassette.

(no direct experience of the new stuff - mine are 2003)

So if I need a newer version campag front mech to match the quick shift levers, will this still be ok with my TA 22/32/44 chainset ? Looking at Parkers International they have some good deals on campag levers, however all of the front mech say a min of 30 teeth on the front chainring ?

Would my best bet be to try to find a set of pre quick shift levers, ie ones where I wont have to change my current front mech ?

I've got 06 Ergo levers, TA 20-36-46 chainset with Shimano road style changer (model?). Back end is 9 speed XTR cassette (12-34) and XTR rear changer. Brakes are Veloce Vees.
This is all on the new tandem and it works perfectly with just CJ's method of routing the cable on the rear changer.
