When fitting a seat post collar clamp, should the bolt be lined up with the groove in the frame, or on the opposite side?

    it depends on the frame.

Normally it does not matter but some makers say it has to be a certain way.

    Why?

I have always chosen to place the bolt over the groove on my mountain bikes. Recently replaced a clamp on a Specialized Roubaix and the manufacturer's instructions were that the bolt should be at 180 degrees from the groove. Was wondering if I had been going about things the wrong way.

and the Specialized Roubaix has a frame made out of....

like i said some makers state how to position the clamp for one reason or another, usually when the frame is not steel or aluminum.
