Fulcrum R3 balls-up

I've got a pair of Fulcrum R3 wheels. I foolishly thought that I might be able to fit a Dura-Ace cassette to the rear wheel. No joy - damn things are Campag specific right down to the bearings. Wish I'd known this before I'd ordered the cassette

Why don't these things come with labels that say "WARNING! Will only work with Campag Stuff" :?:

Fulcrum wheels are available with Shimano freehubs - get your LBS to swap or order a spare freehub.

Of course if you get a Campag splined hub, you won't be able to fit a Shimano cassette.

Yes, you ordered the wrong wheel, or were sold the wrong one

What a friggin' mess  Now that I've got a Campag-based wheel, there is no way to retrofit it to accept a Shimano cassette is there?

Yes there is. See Monty's post.

I'm having my DT wheels converted from Shimano to Campag. New freehub and shop is fitting it for free.

Before I bought those I was looking at a set of Zondas to run on my Allez. That would've involved what you're now faced with, i.e. freehub replacement which Italian Cycle Products quoted £55 for.

If the wheels are unused though couldn't you plead ignorance (if you haven't already been misled) and return the Campag wheel for a Shimano version?

Not easily or cheaply - replacement freehub bodies are hard to get for Fulcrum wheels and expensive (£50-60).

Custom cassettes are available with campag splines and shimano spacing, but again, they aren't cheap (Marchisio ones are £70+)

Your best option would be to speak with seller to seek an exchange for a Shimano specific rear wheel - should be an option if you purchased from a shop or reputable online retailer, but probably not an option in a private sale between individuals.

If you don't want to shell out on the freehub, here's an option. Get a Campag cassette, Mirage, Veloce or a Miche one - it has to have seperate sprockets. Get a Shimano 10 speed spacer kit from Highpath Engineering for £15 - swap the spacers out and you'll have a Shimano-spaced Campagnolo wheel - you'll need an extra spacer at the end to make up for the narrower 10-speed cassette. Of course, when you finally see the light, you can replace the spacers and ride a decent groupset....

Contacted company that sold me the bike and they say that they will sort the wheel out for me free of charge :D Just need to make sure that they follow through on that promise.
Thanks to all for advice, although Monty Dog's last comment was a bit below the belt... hit me when I'm down why don't you :lol:

  • IIRC the R3 comes in two shimano hub types - 8/9/10 spd and 10 spd dura ace only. The *old* 10spd hubs will work with the new dura ace as well but not vice versa, I think.

Ummm, should I also get the front wheel done at the same time do you think? I'm not too bothered but it might look a little odd and make the wheels harder to shift at a later date maybe :?:

why will it look odd? - the front wheel is exactly the same surely?

All the bearings are the same, it is only the cassette body on the rear wheel that is different. Get this changed, since you haven't ridden the wheel, the shop should swap it for you for free.

Jeeze - I'm just demonstrating my ignorance here
Still, thank you for all of the input, it is much appreciated. I will let you know how I get on. I've got a box for the wheel and am now fortifying it ready to send the wheel back to said bike retailer. Hopefully I will get it back next week and all will be well.

Sorry to bounce this open again, but the wheel has been received by the bike shop which is going to sort the problem out - they are even sending me an USE stem by way of compensation for my trouble, since there shouldn't have been a Campag freehub and cassette on there in the first place :D

Don't tempt me - but then I would also have to get some new handlebar wrap and find someone competent to put it on for me
