Budget wheels

I am considering a wheel upgrade on an SCR2 but only want to consider something appropriate to a sub £550 bike especially as my wife will batter me if I spend on 'more needless toys'. I don't intend to race but want a quicker ride and may consider a sportive later in the summer. I have picked up some knockdown Conti Grand Prix 4000 tyres to marry up to the Giant wheels supplied with Alex DA22 rims but feel compelled to change these. Any suggestions including ones to avoid.ta.

Shimano WH R550's - good budget wheel - good price - Light (at this price level) - stiff enough - aero spokes - hubs ok.

try neuvation r28 aero or sl's. Very good value, and you'll certainly feel the diff. Or do some searching on forums, and ebay for some easton tempest 2's. they are simply sensational.
  • I use the cheap Shimano R500 wheelset for training and on my bike in Tenerife (and the raods are sh1te there !) - and they have stood up admirably. All I did was re-adjust the bearings when I got them (to ensure they weren't binding on the races - which they were) and re-greased using quality lithium grease.

Planet X Model B wheels or if you are heavier (or fat) like me Planet X Model C wheels.

Had mine for about 6-8 months and they are abused a lot and still run true. They are also lightish compared to other wheels out there.
Obsessed is a word used by the lazy to describe the dedicated!

Shimano RS20s are £110 pair and the Quest Comos are 60 quid a pair. Budget enough for ya?
  • I've also got a pair of Quest Comos for spare wheels for my 'race' bike. A bit on the heavy side , but they are bombproof and as they're deepish section look the biz !

Yes I bought some too, have to say they are bloody heavy, depends on what frame you are putting them really.

If it's a heavy frame, like mine, then it makes for some hard going! Nicely made wheels though.

I doubt many of the budget wheels on the market would be a significant upgrade over the stock wheels. Why not keep them til they wear out and get something nicer later on?
