I have a Vitus 979 frame from the mid to late 80's. Cuurently it is running a mixture of 105 and ultegra kit from the mid 90's. I want to upgrade the brake and gear change too STI.
Question 1.
How do I find out what size Cassette/wheel combo I can fit?
Q2. Will my current 7 speed set up work with a 7 speed Sora set up?
I can afford to talk softly!....................I carry a big stick!

7-speed Sora STIs will be fine - you can also run 8 speed STIs and have a redundant 'click'. The size of cassette is entirely dependent upon the hub - does it have a screw-on freewheel or a freehub and cassette? The available choice for 7-speed freewheels is pretty limited these days. You could fit a stronger, modern freehub/cassette hub and have a choice of cassettes which includes MTB with 32 teeth sprockets.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
