Ok so my bike bike chain broke and I want to know if I should replace it with the standard Shimano IG-31 chain that the bike came with or is there a batter chain available with the same spec ? it's a 24 gear bike.
Any help would be very much appreciated !,
Ant

I prefer the SRAM chains, with the powerlink which means much easier removal for cleaning and servicing. The more expensive one s are nickel plated so don`t rust.

Yes, just go for a SRAM, like the PC 48. Shimano like to donfuse themselves with all this IG and HG stuff, and joining pins. The SRAM are wasy to fit, cheap, and work fine.

However... if the cogs are worn, they may need replacing too.

Nothing bike related lol. I bought a green laser pen, with the sole intention of annoying people!

Thanks for ya help one and all !, Sadly I went to a Bike shop which told me the HG is a better chain than the IG-31 standard and I parted with my money !

Needless to say I used my bike and now the chain drops down a gear off the front sprocket when in 2nd (middle) gear regardless of any adjustment I make to it !, I am taking it back for a refund in the morning and I'm sure in for a fight as I already took out 4 Links to match my old chain !

Could it be the wrong chain ?, the bike is only two year old and I've only used it for a total of about 10mile after breaking my collar bone on it, I don't think it could be worn sprockets !,

Anyone reccomend a good bike dealer who knows what there stuff I can buy off ?

Check chain for stiff links first. Is the chain the right lenth?
Also check your front chainrings which may be worn,or have bent teeth and need replacement.

I can hihgly recommend the KMC 9.93 chain after fitting one to my bike the other week.

Everythign just shifts smoother, maybe the XT casette helped a bit too, but the chain feels ace

For what it's worth, I've always had problems with snapping shimano chains, so aseveral years ago, I switched to sachs (who longer exist).

When I had to replace my sachs chain, people recomended SRAM, but I never had a SRAM chain last more than a fortnight. It seems they're made of butter or something. Also, despite looking very very similar to the old Sachs item, SRAM's powerlink caused me no end of trouble. it just doesn;t seem to lock in place as well as the ols Sachs ones used to.

So, I now happilly run Wipperman, or Rohloff chains, with nary a problem.
