I have Shamino W 550 wheels and Gatorskin tyres 700 x 23. Replacing the tyre without nicking the inner tube for me is a nightmare. Would it be that the correct size tyre for these wheels is 700 x 25. ?

23mm are fine on those wheels.

Your wheels are fine, it's that Conti tyres are tight...

25mm will be wider and talle rthan 23, but the rim bead will be the same diameter and they'll be just as difficult to fit.

Rubino tyres are a nightmare to fit to those wheels as well.

  • it's the wheels that are the issue. i've had conti and specialized tyres on those rims and had the same nicking-the-inner-tube issues.

That wheel is certainly designed to take 700x23s. I put a Gatorskin 700x23 on a new Shimano WH-500 (slightly different wheel) recently without trouble. I did use tyre levers. I do find the tyres with kevlar puncture protection in them (Gatorskins and Armadillos) are a lot more difficult to get on than tyres without. Have to use tyre levers. But once you get it on you won't need to be doing it again ;-)

I use Rubino Pro folding 23's on my R 550's - and yes, it is fairly awkward to get the last part of the tyre on when your putting it on - the first 3/4's - 4/5's goes on fairly smoothly, then it's extremely taught for the last bit - I use levers on that bit to snap it on - it is awkward (Competent wheel and tyre though :)).

Thanks for that, next problem is finding the best pair of tyre levers seems to me that the standard plastic type are rubbish after one or two gatorskin tyre changes.

Agreed - my old basic plastic ones used to bend until there was no useful leverage - currently using the budget blue Park ones- obviously not the "best" out there, but seem to do an ok job so far.

I have always used metal tyre levers, since graduating from spoons (which have little chance with kevlar.) Plastic were very bendy and I may have snapped one once (not sure, long time since I tried one.)
