Difficult Campag Triple Gear Change..

Hi

I have a Campag 2006 Centaur triple on my Kuota Kharma.

Changing upto the big chain ring is nearly impossible. My finger is at full stretch when moving from middle to big ring, many times I can't hold it long enough to get chain to catch. It is especially bad when my fingers are cold.

The FD is at full extension. The the limiter screw is not holding the FD back.

I have struggled with this problem for 2 seasons, and now desperately need a solution, or a new groupset

Any ideas what adjustments I could make.

Is there anyway I can get the move to the big ring not to be at the full extension of the shifter?

HELP.....

Jim

Sounds like you've got too much slack in the cable, therefore the ratchet doesn't have enough 'pull' to move the mech all the way. Also pull back the hoods and make sure that they or bar tape isn't fouling the internals of the lever. Have you got the cable clamped on the right side of the screw? The cable should be inboard of the screw. Worth checking www.parktool.com to make sure it's installed correctly too,
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • May be an idea to check the alignment of the front deraileur.

I've found that if you slacken of the clamp bolt and rotate it back or forward a few mm can help.
  • Perhaps you have a bottom bracket suitable for a double chainset and not a triple - i.e. a 111mm axle length instead of 115.5mm. That moves your chainset in towards the frame and might make selecting the outer ring (or inner ring) more difficult.

I do not think you have realised that you do not have to make your move all in one go. That is the beauty of Campag in that it is not indexed just a multi position ratchet. Simply make the shift in two quick bites, then your fingers are not at full stretch. Sorry if it sounds as if I am teaching my granny to suck eggs, but that seems elementary to me.

If you have to hold the front changer against the stop to get it to shift, then your outward throw limit screw could probably do with undoing 1/4 or 1/2 a turn.

Bottom bracket length makes no difference to this sort of thing. I have several Campag triple in use on different length axles to suit different frames, including one on a 111 axle.
  • Thanks for all the replies..

I took the bike to the local bike shop. They changed the cable and lubed the Ergo-Shifter . This helped a little, but it is still not as easy to shift as Shimano Ultegra.

Even using the incremental mmovements available with Campag, the shift is still not as clean as I'd expect/like.

All the limiting screws are properly adjusted..

    Cheers

Record and Chorus Triples need a 111mm

Indeed they do. But the thread author uses a Centaur triple, which normally requires a 115.5mm axle.
