xt gear operation

went to look at an orange 5 that was on ebay the other day and was fairly local to me. The bike was a complete shed but was fitted with xt gears which were operated by moving the brake lever up and down. Is this how xt gears are shifted on current models because I have to say I hated it. Much rather have thumb shifters to be as I don't think I'd ever get on with having to change gears under braking. bike ended up selling for £255 I think.

    not all of shimanos gears are like that you can get triggers for all as well.

    Those are Dual Control shifters - as nick said not all Shimano shifters are like that at all, there is an XT trigger option.
