Who is - I thought the people running those sort of pressures were using tyres rated for it?
Anyway, I regularly run the tyres on the tandem at up to 50% over the rated pressure - is the only way to get a decent ride that isn't horribly soft and squidgy when you've got 150kg on the bike. Given tyres are supposedly tested up to twice the rated pressure I don't see it as a huge risk, and we've done thousands of miles like that without a blow-off.0 -
It is my belief that the pressure shown on the sidewall of tyres was the recommended 'minimum pressure' - am I wrong?Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom0

side walll of my Race X Lites says 'inflate to 100 - 120 psi' so normally go to 120 psi.
most tyres i've seem have between 110 and 120 on them, must admit not seen any that do not go over 100.0 -
rechecked actually says inflate to 110 - 120psi0
-
maybe i am wrong and thinking too much about car tyres  but is that not telling me i should inflate to between 110 - 120 otherwise it might not be safe?0
-
I suspect people inflate to 120psi because it makes them feel fast.
I run a 90 myself. More grip and more comfort that way.Facts are meaningless, you can use facts to prove anything that's remotely true! - Homer0 -

I usually ride at 100 psi for comfort, but if I want to 'feal' fast go up to 110!0

I think its really to do with avoiding snakebite punctures - it is for me anyway.
me too.0 -
As with any technical aspect of cycling worth discussing, Sheldon has an interesting view on this subject:

My old Vredestein tyres are rated to 160 psi...never tried putting that much in them tho... :?Cake makes me happy0
-
its cool to tell people i run 4 times more pressure in my bike tyres that their car......
but mine are rated to 120psi and i'm a fat knacker so i run em that hard
my MTB ones are rated at 55psi and i run them at 38-40psi for more gripWe're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

Mine are rated to 145, so i put at around 120, maybe a tad more at times.0
-
Does anyone check what their rims are rated to though ? I think my mavic take less pressure than the Vredestein tyres.0

My new bike is coming with a set of Fuclrum 3's and they seem to be only rated to 113psi.0 -

Sheldon advice was pretty much bang-on, as he usually was.0 -
Absolutely !
Back to the original post, it amazes me people just blindly put the pressure in that it says on the side of the tyre...0 -
I usually inflate to 100psi at the most, maybe between 90 and 100 on occasion.
I really can't be bothered to spend any more time pumping them up higher, particularly when they just make the ride more jarring.0 -
About 110 psi for me. Too little and you will puncture !
TT'ed at 130-140psi - but that's with tubs.
If your tyre is going to give way, you will know about it - I had a set, many years ago, and they were worn...blew at about 100PSI - sounded like a gun going off - whilst riding !!0
