new giant tcr heavier than old?

I have just purchased a nice new shiny giant tcr c2 (2007 model). i still have my previous giant tcr composite 2 (2004). its still in nice nick and so keeping it for my 2nd bike.
one thing which i immediately noticed today was that even though both bikes are same size(similar standard component new bike ultegra where as old was centaur) the new bike seems to be significantly heavier than the old model. (no scales to find out exact diff but guessing 1/2 - 1 kilo). Just wandering if anyone else noticed anything similar/explain reason. I thought they were meant to making componenets lighter but it looks like they have over profiled the frame and made a lot thicker than last one. I'm sure the new one will prob be stiffer/quicker on the whole but just thought worth mentioning to warn people before buying so called new lighter bikes.
