Sold my old bike to a friend last month, and he's having a bit of a problem with the forks.

They are 2006 Marzocchi MX Comp ETA 120mm's

With the right pressure put in for his weight, they seem to compress more than they should. Even with a lot more put in, they're still compress quite a bit. They also make a squidgy noise when compressed and if you pull up on the handle bars when riding, its as if the forks extend and make a knocking noise.
There is also slight play in them when the bike is rocked forward and backwards with the brakes applied- actually thought it was the headset at first, but seems to be coming from the forks.

I know it'll be a bikeshop job, but if i have an idea whats up with them, we can decided whether its worth repairing or buying a replacement.

either they need more air. forget any pressure settings just ad air untill the sag is correct.

sounds like the bushes need replacing.

when was the last time the forks were serviced?

    Never had them serviced.

We've put quite a bit more air in them, but they're still not right - still squidgy.

What sort of price are we looking at for replacement bushes + fitting?

I had a similar problem with my 2003 MX-Comps after some oil escaped while letting air out of the forks. They always had a squishey sound as the air/oil mixed but after the oil was lost when reaching the top of their travel the forks would make a hard clunk. I'd imagine new seals and replacement fluid would be needed, for which I'd recommend sending them off to Windwave.

Just had a look on Windwave, if it is indeed the bushings, its $75.
Seeing as they're a cheapish fork, i think we'll look at some replacement forks.

As shown in the current What Mountain Bike mag.. You can get MX pro's for £180 from windwave, but evans seem to about £40 cheaper from what I can tell.
If it's worth replacing you can get something like dirt jumper 3's for £117 or MZ supercomp for £108 (all from evans).
