is it definately all bolted up tight? things can work loose in the first few rides when new kit is fitted. i dont think you are heavy enough to give your drivetrain too much of a hard time :)

could be the pedals need re-tightening

Pedals are on very tightly and fully greased up (even though they are sealed) - might try tightening the BB more - a mate has a BB tool.

I'm "overweight" I'll have you know (over 25 on BMI scale)...:lol::lol::lol:
  • Be very careful if you are tightening it.I killed a new ht 2 bb in about a week because I over tensioned it.The pretensioning cap should be finger tight to take out any play, and no tighter.(2nm)
The 2 crank arm pinch bolts should be tight but not too tight 12-15nm.
Your grinding might be just the chain rubbing on the front mech. The indexing might be slightly out following fitting of your new chainset.

Definitely not the chain - it's a very slight vibration under lots of pressure and it's consistent around a full pedal stroke.

Maybe I'll just ask my LBS!

Have you checked pedals for bearing play?

So it could be worth replacing my Shimano one just in case it starts to wear out... :P

Yep - pedals are definitely fine. Wellgo MG1s and fully sealed but also newish and spinning fine.

Sometimes you just "know" where a noise is coming from (other times not) and I'm 99% sure it's the BB/crank. But it's a very very minor niggle!

might be worth taking it apart and making sure it is cleaned and then greased to make sure all is as it should be.

Well I did some random "twiddling" and it now seems fine!
Made sure the pedals were tight (they needed a bit more TBH - naughty LBS!), hand tightened the BB and gave it all a good clean and lube. No more annoying vibration - sometimes stuff just seems to fix itself!

have a lx ht2 bb with 2400miles on it, still like butter. have a xt ht2 bb with 2000miles on it also still feels buttery smooth. i'd love to try a hope ceramic but these shimano's just keep going :) maybe i got luckywith them? shame shimano chainrings are made from butter though.

its funny, how some people get so much use out of their external bearing setups, yet others have problems after 2 weeks.

from reading about people who've taken shimano bb cups apart, seems that the biggest problem is dirt getting into the supposedly sealed bearings, so maybe the difference is due to external factors such as what conditions people ride in, whether they use a jetwash on their bike ... or maybe some models of the shimano cups are just better sealed than others?

either way, doesn't seem to be a great situation. Like many of you, I'm running my shimano external bb till it starts having problems, then will replace with a hope or chris king external bb, whichever turns out to be best

any thoughts btw on that comparison? chris king is a bit more expensive (in the UK at least)

hello from a new user btw!

The Shimano BBs are getting better all the time. Indeed the sealing is the main problem, but always ensure they are preloaded properly.
