Am in, raring to go. I enjoyed it last year despite ... everything.
You just have to ride like you never have to breathe again.

    Appen might do.

But there's a 10K I fancy doing the same day, can't do both so decisions decisions...

Might see what the weather's like on the day - a 10K in the wind and rain would be less unpleasant, but if it's a glorious weekend I'll cycle the tops.

I'll be there! I'm very unfit at the moment so I'll suffer... :?

    Already discussed here.

I'm looking forward to it. Should be a challenging ride without being mega steep. Though Holme Moss is always tough.

I'm just hoping for decent weather - we must be due a good weekend. Last Saturday there was a couple of inches of snow at the top of Snake Pass (so much for spring!). I seem to have spent most of April getting cold and wet!

    See you there.

    Right, sorry, I'm back now.

I'll be doing this as my first sportive. I was born and brought up in Batley and my mum still lives there. I'll either :-

    (a) pay her a visit and maybe take a short ride on the Sunday or

    (b) turn up Sat evening, demand fish and chips and beer and then use her pad as a local place to doss.

    ..depending on your interpretation.

I rode Holme moss last year, on the same "normal" chainring as I have now and had to stop for a little rest about 3/4 of the way up.

Started my "tapering" by just (!) doing 45m in the rain around the Cambs flats today. Will maybe ride in to work slowly (10m each way) Tues and Thurs and hopefully that should see me in good condition.

However, if the weather looks really bad I'll save the petrol money and have a lie in - that's the spirit, eh???

See you there, I'll be on a blue trek2000 wearing my blue DHB top and I'll look like I'm having a cardiac.

Is there a hill profile for this ride anywhere??

I'm sure I saw one the other day, but can't find it again?

I contacted them and they were adamant about not letting me in. Can you give me your mobilenumber and then if I can get away from the missus, I'll do the naughty ride if they won't take my money.

Madness! Less than 2/3rds the places taken and they shut up shop a week early.

I agree - it is really unfortunate! You're not the only person complaining about not getting in.

Do the ride anyway. I would never suggest that for events like the Fred Whitton Challenge because of the nature of the Lakeland roads, but those bigger West Yorkshire roads wouldn't have any problem coping with a couple of hundred extra riders - in fact the organisers obviously agree because they set the limit 200 higher than the numbers that they have achieved! Just do the decent thing and take your own food/drink. It would be wrong for unofficial riders to use the feed stations because they will be catering for the official numbers only.

If your conscience bothers you, make a personal £15 donation to the event charity.

The other issue is insurance. I'll be covered by the event insurance, but unofficial riders won't be. It may be that their home insurance covers them... I've checked and I'm covered for personal liability when cycling upto £2,000,000 on my M&S policy (as well as £4k per bike!).

IMO every cyclist should make sure that they have insurance cover just in case they are ever held liable for causing a serious accident.

I'll PM you my number in a minute John. It would be nice to ride with you again, but please take pity on me going uphill! I've put a stone on since we last met and you were climbing really well then on that lovely new bike of yours. Don't forget - if you fancy making it up to a century, start from Mytholmroyd! If 80 miles is enough, I'll meet you near the HQ.

PS Hmm, your post reminds me - I haven't entered Pain in the Pennines yet - I'll do that now.

Thank's for the hill profile ColinJ, it looks a bit lumpy don't it!

Providing the weathers ok I'll be doing it, got a 90 mile drive first though to get there.
Had a bit of a chest infection last week ( pathetic excuse No 27 ), so been out for a quick spin tonight to "exorcise" the bogey-man!!
A bit "wheezy" but I think I'll be ok, ..or will it turn into an early bath!!

Lumpy it is! I've done most of the hills before, but one or two of them never in the direction planned. The climb out of Meltham is one I've always done as a descent and that will be quite tough, judging by how fast I normally go down it!

The current forecast for Sunday suggests a wet start, then just drizzle after that. Thankfully, the wind is supposed to be much less of a feature than it has been recently.

The forecast is changing hour by hour. When I looked at MetCheck last night, the band of heavy rain was supposed to be about 4 or 5 hours earlier. With a bit of luck it will have shifted to Sunday evening by the time we get there! Having said that, I'm debating whether to bodge my mudguards back on for the day  .

John - I got your message(s). Here's a map showing the event HQ. I'll probably put the route on my GPS device. I use it as a glorified bike computer, even if events are well sign-posted.

Do you fancy doing the extra bits to get 100 miles in? If so, I'll meet you at the usual place (Mytholmroyd Community Centre car park) at 07:15. If not, I'll meet you near HQ 08:30 - 08:45 ish.
  • er, I'll meet you at the HQ and twiddle a few extra Kms afetr the ride if I am able!!!!

    Okay, see you there.

I'll be going straight back down through Greetland on the way home and somehow I can't see you wanting to come that way because you'd have a 200m hill to climb to get back to your car at the end of those extra kms!

Alternative suggestion - If you parked in Greetland you'd have to climb the hill in the morning to get to the HQ but at least you'd have an easy run back afterwards and could do some extra along the A646 with me if you felt like it. You'd have to come as far as Luddenden Foot with me and then ride back to Greetland to get 100 miles in. If you decide to go for that option, I'd try and meet up with you at the foot of the hill about 08:15.

    Hi,

if i could just respond to the issue of late entries?

The limit was set as a maximum for catering etc, obvioulsy we had to have a method of letting those providing food know the quantities and a cut off point was the best way.

It now transpires that the school being used for an overflow car park will lock up at 20.00, so riders will be told of that at the start, and when parking their cars. ( those who drive to the event)

As has been mentionned it is an open road event, and i would hope that as it is raising money for a very worth charity, to build a children's hospice, anyone riding but not having pre enterred will make a suitable donation.

Good news of the changing weather forecast and let's hope for a reasonable day

I've just fitted Race Blades onto my summer bike. Should keep me a bit drier.

I think its going to be one of those "character forming" days...

I've just looked at the MetOffice website, it has heavy rain showing from 07:00 to 16:00.... Second thoughts anybody?

I'm a bit undecided as the thought of being in the saddle for a minimum of 5 hours when it's pouring down with rain is slightly off-putting. Think I'll make a decision in the morning. If I do go then it looks like transferring the race blades from my training bike to my racing bike.

C'mon people! It's water not sulphuric acid. It's not going to be cold or windy.

The course is such that, if you get too wet and miserable after half way round, you can get back to the HQ very easily. Better to be a DNF than a DNS!
