Is my daughter going to be a giant?

Just turned 11 and she's 5ft 4in! tallest in the school (boys inc.) Not sure why she's so tall as I'm 5' 10" and Mrs DBG is 5' 5", she's grown over an inch in the last 3 months. My worry is she's going to end up about 6' 6" and get bullied at high school. Does anyone know if there's a pattern to growth and if she's likely to suddenly slow down?

  • Kids all grow at different rates. Height when young is not a great indicator of height at adult hood. It may well be she doesn't actually grow a lot more height wise just develop. I would have thought that over the next few years the other kids, especially the boys, will catch up and a lot will end up taller.

My sister was told by doctors that her two children would be very tall. Nothing much seemed to be happening until my nephew got to 13 a couple of years ago but since then he has shot up. I see him about 4 times a year and he is currently growing about 2 inches between visits! He is nearly my height now (6' 1") and so far shows no sign of stopping. The forecast was that his sister would be even taller than him , but she is a couple of years younger so it remains to be seen if the forecast was correct.

My stepdaughter was much taller than all the other girls of her age from 3 to 14 and we thought that she was going to be very tall, but she suddenly stopped growing mid-teens and settled at a modest 5' 6" or so.

So... I think it is possible to spot the likelihood of someone being tall, but hormones are weird things and anything can happen!

Kind of related - did anyone see the BBC Breakfast programme this morning with that 3 year old kid who has a rare genetic order that means he'll never grow taller than your average 3 year old?

It was like watching Alan Partridge - "isn't he tiny?"

I wouldn't worry too much. Everyone grows at a different rate. She's probably just grown early.

I've not grown much since about 12, I was always one of the tallest and most built up until everybody else started to go through growth spurts.

By the time she goes to senior school, (not long i don't think?), a few other girls should have cought up/come from different junior schools, and girls typically grow taller first, she won't be so tall relatively. So i really wouldn't worry, I'd be more worried about how much h/w she gets. :)

I would not worry, we had a girl in our Scout group who at 12 was about 6' with long blond hair and at a push would have passed for mid 20's

Now she is mid 20's and looks the same and never grew any more

I seem to remember that an average indicator of adult height is to multiply the persons height at aged 2.5. So a child that is 3 foot high at 2.5yrs should in theory grow to 6 foot.

According to our medical advice, girls stop growing at puberty.

So you have a choice: a very tall but sweet and lovely daughter or a slightly shorter one that bursts into tears all the time and looks daggers at you when you venture to crack a joke (or worse still, crack a cheek!).

I didn't know about it at the time but when I commented about my nephew's recent growth spurt, she said she had been waiting for it. I've no idea why the doctors said what they said, but I'll ask her next time we speak.

Not trying to make light of the situation but I don't think that to many people would bullie
    a 6-6 person. I'd think twice about it, even if she is a girl. I have a 6-3 neice and 2, 6-10
nephews. There don't get bothered much.

Don't worry, I was about that height when I was 11. I stopped growing when I was about 12/13 (I am 5'7'' now).

Girls reach their full height years before boys do.

I wouldn't worry - my girlfriend was apparently not far off her adult height (5' 6") by the age of 10 or thereabouts.

Isn't there some thing they can do with kids where they predict their final height by looking at the gaps between the bones in their fingers - at least I remember they did that with the short kid on Different Strokes. Actually wasn't the short kid on Different Strokes actually a very short adult - or did some one just tell me that once and I believed it ?

My girl is only 5 this August and she is in size 8-9yr old clothes. She is the tallest in her nursery and most of the year above. I am tall and so is my better half and most of my family is tall as well.

Its not just my family as I see some of my nephews friends are very tall also and most of them are approaching 6ft. Its just one of these things.

    Has she got big paws?

Actually, seriously, what will be will be, some people are never happy about the body they've been given, some will always be happy.
