Last years bike, secondhand, or an 08 ride. (budget £200)

Ive got a housemate who came out with us on my spare bike with us round cannock and has now got bitten by the bug.
- He's not looking to spend much, and will also be using it get in and our of campus when we go back to uni at the end of the year. But im just looking at options around the £200 budget.

He's been looking at a few ebay jobs and there seam to be a handfull of 6-18month old bikes, bought for around £4-500 which can nw be had within the budget.
- Down side ofcause is you dont know what its really like without seeing it.
- And that there all over the country and shipping largly knocks it on the head.

Evans (and others) then have a number of last years bikes a knockdown prices. Such as this hardrock http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70060 or some Mongooses Tyax's http://www.evanscycles.com/product.jsp?style=70319 .
- Seams to be a good saving and so maybe thats a good way to get more for less?
- Frame devolpment seams to have slowed a bit now aluminums nothing new, and alot of them still have the same equpment (shifters/forks etc) as they do on this years model.

Just interested in your thoughts really.

I guess the only other possable other dilemma is at that price 'to disk or not to disk' and the debate on whether cheap promax mechnicals are actaully better than some half decent v's.

Few other threads with similar questions worth looking out for (Beginners Section)

As you say, with 2nd hand need to know its in good nick. Buying new will give you a warranty and back up. Try the local shops, but might not have the bargains - however will get to try them, and free service.

mongoose Tyax series are very good budget bikes.

Be careful with second hand, unless its a mates bike you know the history of then its a risk.As said above Mongoose make great entry level bikes !

I recently went through the same thing as you, In the end I have just bought the Mongoose Tyax Elite for £299 from Evans, my budget started off the same as your friends, but in the end I saw it as an investment so have spent a bit more. I would suggest he does the same, and if he can't afford it at the moment then wait another month and save a bit more.
There is a shortage of bikes at the moment anyway, so by the time he has saved up they will be back in stock, for example, I was looking at the GT Avalanche 3.0, but they weren't available for 10 weeks!!
