Campag BB stuffed - options?
Hi all;
I've been getting an annoying clicking coming through the cranks when pedalling. The other night, riding home, I worked out what it was: my bottom bracket has a small but definite amount of lateral play (i.e. I can hold the cranks and rock them slightly side to side - the click is them rocking back and forth as the pressure switches from side to side as I pedal). As the BB is a sealed unit, I'm assuming that it's completely stuffed and is a replacement job. The BB is securely in place on each side and the play is definitely in the middle. It's a Campagnolo Veloce that's had about 6000k of use (which I'm not happy about - I'd expect a bit more grunt!)
So - am I right in thinking that I need a replacement Campag BB? I'm using a Campag Mirage chainset at the mo. I seem to recall hearing that Campag chainsets use a slightly different taper on the BB axle to other manufacturers, locking you in to using their kit. Can anyone confirm this?
If there are alternatives, can anyone recommend a good replacement? Ideally fairly solid and hardwearing, also ideally inexpensive (don't have too much cash to knock around at the mo).
Or am I just being a muppet and missing some obvious adjustment to the BB that would fix this in a minute? I don't think I am, but my experience has lead me to never discount the "I'm an idiot" theory. [;)]

Veloce BBs are about 12 quid from memory . If you need to get a new one every now and again it's no big deal is it ?Luke0

True - but I'm in New Zealand, the local bike shops charge through the nose, and the postage from the UK is surprisingly high. [;)]0

The true fit and forget option for campag users is a Phil Wood hub who do the compatible ISO taper - but that's like £65 + £20 for the cups.0

Campag do use ISO, but it's by no means exclusive to them. Sugino, Stronglight and many others have used it in the pass. But you would probably be best advised to buy another since the only other one easy to come by is the cheap Miche one.0
