continuing off OT there are some wonderful Dutch girls on their bikes in Holland - great big heavy old lumps of machines guided gracefully amongst the masses - beautiful :P
having said that there was a young lady this morning that insisted on getting in front of me at least 3 sets of traffic lights and each time she was so hestitant to take off (on green btw) that I was starting to get a bit annoyed - but I did have the opportunity to notice that her bicycle had wooden mudguards (Ash I think).

The rising price of petrol has encouraged a lot of motorists to ride for the first time since they passed their test. Some have zero competence and some have no manners at all but they are now cyclists and we should be forgiving and show by example, rather than admonishment, how they should conduct themselves. Be patient and accept the minor inconveniences rather than get worked up about them.

It seems I'm in a minority with my rural commute - I'm usually shocked if I see another cyclist, let alone one in front of/behind me

Its the "first day of term" phenomenon. Lots of gormless undegraduates wobbling their way obliviously to lectures. 2 months later, those who are still actually attending lectures are getting the bus, because its November.

The reason these slow cyclists move in front of you at the lights is because it's been beaten into them that that's the best position for a cyclist to be in terms of safely moving away at traffic lights. They completely fail to think of the effects this has on other cyclists.

I found myself in Holland last Month...it was raining and there were a loads of cyclist cycling with umbrellas and various angle dependent on their speed...vertical for the slow cruisers horizontal for the faster ones...quite fun to watch...also amusing to see what else they carry on their bikes...A large orange exercise ball for example!

On the rural section of my commute I am plagued by white vans and tarmac lorries from shall we say to be polite, an 'encampment of traveling people', on the city section I contend with the usual city horrors. Commuting is a twilight nether-world of elation and frustration, populated by a myriad of strange two wheels creatures and dangerous powered behemoths. I do concur over the irritating qualities of slow moving riders who plod on regardless of traffic regulations.. although I have nothing against slow riders in general or fast riders for that matter as long as they observe the rules of the road. I rid at my own pace if someone wants to overtake that’s fine , if they want to jump the lights ....well...it does quite annoy me, for one thing I have no wish to slowly manoeuvre my way through piles of steaming viscera and mangled aluminum, steel. titanium or carbon fibre, with is the eventual result of a meeting of cyclist and motorist, when both decide to ignore the red light. For one its murder to get bone fragments out of the tires and two it would make me late for work. On the upside the human gene pool would be somewhat cleansed of one more unwanted aspect of behavior, but that is a minor point.

Commuting has enough intrinsic hazards without riders anding there own infuriating habits to the mix. It would be refreshing if cyclists ( I use the term in the broadest sense) could step back from all this and be a little more considerate and communicative to one another, it would make for a pleasent environment and a better image for cyclists

I remember last year when the rail strike was on this was a particular problem, but thankfully only for a couple of days! I manged to get the approach to a set of lights near Kennington Park just right and arrived there on the right hand side of the first lane and blasted past everyone else, but got held up big time at the south side of London Bridge!

Most of these "offenders" are probably new to cycling and will take a while to learn the way of the roads! Once you have some commuting miles under your belt you can then better judge how to deal with situations like this. I quite like to sprint off at the lights, but if the space or other cyclist don't permit this I'll happily hold back!

So if anyone spots a little chap, on a black Giant SCR3.0, most likely in a sleeveless t-shirt with tribal tat's on his arms waiting at the lights say hello :-)

I'm sorry but I've got so annoyed with slow cyclist that I now move to the front of the que.

The only good thing about this is that it usually flames someone into a race, and I can then sit on their wheel until they run out of puff and I can pull away having got a free ride

I'm sorry but most cyclist are just so slow

    its not a race!
