I dare say there is a fairly definite answer to this...no. But if i was to buy a single speed bike would it be possible to put an 8 speed on it? if so how much would it cost? (approx)

The frame needs to have a mech hanger.

You can get geared frames that can be run as singespeed. e.g the Santa Cruz Chameleon, or a DMR with their SwopOut dropouts.

No. Cost would be too prohibitive TBH. Hanger for rear mech in some shape or form. New rear wheel, Cassette, shifter, rearmech, cables, braze on/cable stops for frame. Quickly looking at £120 plus before pricing hanger and cable stops/braze ons.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.
