Chaps,

going to have a look at this at somepoint this week, I'm a little confused as it has been converted from a flat bar bike, but do you think the holes in the forks, I guess where other brakes could go, I can use them to mount mudguards do you think?

EDIT: Doh - forgot to put the link in

Thinking of maybe a winter bike/or even a commuter approach.

Would appreciate your input, oh and what do you think of the bike?

Cheers

I have SKS RaceBlades on my Langster during the winter using 23 section tyres so I think they will fit on the Marin without any problems.

Looking at the pictures it appears to have mudguard fittings on the forks and rear drop-outs so mudguards look a strong possibility. Best to ask the seller or, better still if it's not too far from you, go and have a look.

It looks a very nice machine. My wife has been riding a Marin (over 20k miles so far) and she's very happy with it.

it looks like it will have clearance for full guards yes - it has quite a bit of clearance cos the cyclocross style canti- brakes.

very smart looking it is too!

    Hi there.

I'm afraid they won't fit. My cross bike has canti brakes mounts in just the same place, and that's tight where the clips for the race blades attach. No amount of fettling would make them fit...

I ended up using a seat-post mounted mudguard for wet winter commuting instead.

A set of standard SKS guards should fit OK. Better than Raceblades anyway.

    Thanks for your replies everyone,

Andrew, did you look at SKS narrow guards, would they fit, or did you just not want full mudguards?

Geoff, I have 2 Marin's myself, and love them to bits, they are proper quality bikes IMHO.

All: What is the deal with these Canti brakes, any idea why he would have fitted them instead of the usual suspects?

I am going to see the bike shortly, so will let you knwo what the result is.

What do you think about turning it into a rufty tufty commuter/cyclo cross type bike, as in chunkier tyres, capable for handing a canal towpath etc etc?

    Possibility?

    Many thanks

re the canti-brakes - it's either a drop bar conversion and the bike was previously a flat-bar hybrid type of bike where cantis aren't unheard of (specialized sirrus too I believe)

or it has been a cyclo-cross bike where mud clearance is all important

i'd suspect the former - don't worry about it - they will be good brakes and overall the bike looks great! - hope it fits you ok.

Thanks gkerr4, yep it is defo a hybrid conversion, but that's good to know the brakes aren't a weak point.

I hope it fits too, it's exactly the same frame size as my Marin MTB, so I am hoping it would just be a case of whether the reach to the hoods is a bit too much of a stretch.

"it would just be a case of whether the reach to the hoods is a bit too much of a stretch."

Looks as if currently a pretty long stem - and its angled down. Just flipping it will lessen the reach. And if that's insufucient then should take a significantly shorter one without affecting handling.
