Help! 2008 rear XT hub 'knocking' already - how to tighten?

As above really, last night I noticed a degree of free play in the rear hub, could anyone explain how to adjust it?
I regularly strip cars and motorbikes but this whole bike malarky is a tad delicate, would I be right in thinking that one side will have a locknut & the other an adjuster nut? The reason I ask is that either seems inacessible without removing the cassette, allen key maybe?
