I have just replaced the headset and i am now stuck between tightening it so much that the handlebars don't turn freely and it being so lose that it rocks back and forward with the front brake on. There is no middle ground - at the moment, the handlebars are stiff and there is a knocking!

What am i doing wrong, i see no mention of stiffness on the park tools or Sheldons sites?

did you fit the new crown race to the forks?
are the bearing the right way up?

have you read the info on parktools? linky below.

Yes i did fit the new crown race.
Bearings the right way up... will get back to you, cheers.

Yes, i did read park tools (but if i got the bearings upside down, maybe not closely enough!)

the only other thing then is the top centering wedge. if it is not the bearings.

The biggest problem was the top bearing. Thank you very much.

It is now turning freely to the right but only about 95% freely to the left. I'd like to blame the cables for providing some resistance, but suspect that something might not be located quite flush. Will get the hammer out!

    Thanks again.
