just before christmass i came off my bike on a patch of ice

i was traveling around 18 mph didnt see the black ice on the raod in a side street as i touched my front brake the bike just dropped to the road with me still holding on i smashed my elbow bruising it and also developed torrets, and just slid...

i went down derailer side and went down hard the bike slid about 2 feet the did a few flips i was ok apart from my torrets and elbow the bike seemed fine and road ok i got to work and home again the derailer was and is scratched but still works but i have noticed that my derailer hanger is bent it is a replaceable one (scott speedster s60 fb)

my question is will it bend back i do have a tool in my park tool kit that could do it or should i just buy another one,
i seen mtb ones being bent back but am worried with the bike bein light alloy it may break or kill the frame.. any help much appriciated.

The tool I've done it with before is an adjustable spanner. Clamp it onto the hanger and apply pressure slowly.

That said I've only ever done this for very small movements of the hanger, but I assume the bike is still working - ish so you should't have to move it that far and the deraillieur can probably compensate for some of the bend in the hanger.

Aluminium is a brittle metal, so anything you do should be done very carefully, unfortunately it's a judgment call as to how far you can go with it.

Sorry if that's not much help

For the sake of £15ish for a replacement it's not worth straightening it as they are deisgned to fatigue easily so will be weaker if you tweak it and a knock to the deraillieur could send it into your wheel which won't be as cheap and easy to replace.

Temporary fix straighten, long term replace.

If you do straighten it yourself, do it in one motion - don't move it back and forth in tiny increments as thit will weaken it even more.

I have fallen and bent the rear mech hanger on both a 10-sp road bike (once) and a 9-sp mountain bike (many times). Never had a problem with the mountain bike because I think there is more tolerance on the 9-sp set up, and each time I have bent back the hanger the indexing has remained smooth. In contrast, I spent ages trying to get the hanger on the 10-sp correct in both the horizonal and vertical but couldn't get it right. Ended up buying a new hanger.

Don't worry too much about breaking the frame - the hanger *should* give way first...

    thanks for you'r replies..

the bike does still work the gears have started to play up now ghost shifting this could be cause of cable stretch though..

i cant use first to 4th as the derailer goes into the spokes thats not a problem as i only use the big ring but if i do go into the middle ring then try to shift back up into the top ring it wont go i have to do it manually with my hand i assume its cause the derailer is bent you can clearly see its bent when you look at it..

i think i will just replace it and the derailer.. its only a cheap shimano 8 speed thing...

Yeah just replace it, if your mech is knackered too use the oportunity to upgrade it, you can get a nice one from CRC for less than the cost of a cheap one in the LBS

As a bike mechanic I have found that most new bikes out of the box have a hanger that has been bent in shipping.
There is an alignment tool for the hanger but it's aligned off of the rim and if the rim is out of true you will not get a proper alignment and your rear derailleur will not shift properly.

    FWIW
