I'm sure I've read every relevant post on here and am still no closer to making a decision.
I need a do everything bike and have a budget of around 1500.
Unfortunately the bike is going to be mostly used for getting me around London for uni and work for which I know anything with gears is over kill, but I will be going back to Shropshire regularly in the summer (where I normally end up being in the saddle for 10 hours at a time) and also plan to pop over to France. Also heard good things about Esher which isn't too far.
At the moment I'm torn between a Chameleon with the X build and AM upgrade with Pike 454 forks, which with LCC discount comes in around 1650 built up for me. Or using Chain Reaction and Merlin to get the parts and build up a Stiffee with roughly the same spec. The only problem with the stiffee option is I've never done a build before, don't really have the tools and only have a flat to work in, but would love to give it a go and can get chain reaction to do the harder bits like bottom bracket and headset fitting.
I'm not dead stuck on those two bikes tho and my mind changes every 5 minutes so don't worry about throwing more spanners in the works.
Sorry for the essay, I appreciate any thoughts.

TBH you need two bikes. a rat bike to get you about and one to sit in the flat untill it is needed.
Looked at the insurance on a 1.5k bike left outside Uni? or outside work. Oh and the cost of the required locks?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yeah I checked out insurance and locks etc, its bearable. Rat bike was my first idea but i really don't have the room for more than two bikes (unfortunately my gf wants one too).
Thanks for the reply.0
