If you do, your finger slip into the path of the rotor and you will end up with a bloody, swollen finger with a tasty black nail. Just don't do it :D

Got a nice cut on my finger from seeing what would happein if I put it between chain and chainring  Cable stabs are another injury I've suffered over the years from individual strands of brake/gear cables.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

I just remember that squirrel picture and then know to keep my hands well clear of any rotors.

I'm sure I remember reading somewhere (I think it was here) that a lad went to Stainburn and did exactly that, but he cut his finegr to the bone and gad to have finger re-shaping surgey, or whatever its called. Nasty! and that was when he was setting the bike up BEFORE his ride! Unlucky!

are you guys mangling yourselves by sticking fingers into the "spokes" of the disc or just by contact with the outside edge?

I've noticed that on my rear disc it has a nice rounded edge whereas the front (wavy) disc is sharp as a razor.

Both were got seperately secondhand so I wonder if someone had taken a file to the rear one to stop this sort of thing happening. I think I might do the same to the front this weekend!

does anyone have a moment when doing maintenance when you're trying to get a nut undone or cranks off or something and you can see you're going to hurt yourself.... then you do?

eg, crank extractor being a bit tough and it gives way suddenly and you put your knuckles into the chain ring?

Yeah I do that all the time pumping up my back tyres. I pull the pump off and smach my nuckles on the back rings.
