Shortening a seatpost?

Hello.
Just taken delivery of my 'Marin Rocky Ridge' this afternoon , but I probably won't get a chance to take it for a ride until later in the week.
I'm only 5' 6" and on my old bike I drop my seat fully when descending steep trails etc. On the 'Marin' the seatpost is approx. 2" higher, when fully lowered, than my previous bike, which could potentially cause problems. I'll not fully know until I've tried it out on the trails, but I figure I may not be able to get back onto the seat after a descent (shorts getting caught on back of seat etc.).
Question is; am I be able to cut approx. 2" off the 'Marin' seatpost? I will, of course, have to ensure that I always have the min. seatpost engaged into the tube (approx. 5") when I raise the seat (I suppose I can mark it in some way).
Or, is it just easier to buy a shorter seatpost (350mm)...even though I don't really want to spend anymore money at the moment? The current seatpost is '30.9mm x 400mm'.
Cheers

yes it is posible to shorten the seat post."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Cheers, Nick.
I'll go get my hacksaw! :twisted:0 -
good choice with the Marin!
just make sure you cut it straight and file off any rough bits when you're done.0 -
Thanks, God.
I'll probably take it to work and have it cut there as I haven't got a vice.0 -

I've got s***loads of them
Yeah, I'm sure I've made the right choice.
Just about every other person I know rides a 'full suss' nowadays, but I like the hardtails...even though I'm old. I keep getting plenty of hassle about how I should go 'full suss', and to be honest I've never ridden one, but I couldn't afford a decent one anyway. The 'Marin' is about as much as I can afford nowadays. I suppose as long as my back can take it, then I'll stick with a hardtail.
Thanks for all the advice...it's such a great help to have everyone's input.0
