My mates rear mech isnt performing right.. Its an xt rapid rise and the problem is it wont go into the highest or lowest cogs...

Yes i have adjusted the limit screws, been indexing gears for years and this is the 1st time ive come across this. It shifts fioen between the other gears...

With the cable off it should spring back to the L limit stop with rapid rise, and hopefully shift into that gear. Things to check are the alignment of mech and gear hanger, cable (smoothness), correct tension of course, and the B tension screw which sets the distance from the top jockey wheel to the large cog. You want it to just clear and not rattle.

Also with the cable off, physically move the mech by hand. Is it going to the stops? Can you feel the spring tension in it?

is the cable on the correct side of the clamp bolt?

stops and cable tension and that is it.

    old dirty cable?

If the mech's had a knock or 2, the pinch bolt mount on the paralellogram may be bent and it'll catch the inner plate in top & bottom gears.
It'll sitck too if you shift vigorously into top gear.
    Fit a new mech.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
