Just invested in a pair of new Shimano shoes to go with the SL pedals on the new bike and when I got them home and started setting up the cleats I discovered they have holes
at the front of the underneath of the shoe ie just below the toecap

Unless it is to cater for some oddly toed cycling alien lifeform, wassat all about then? :?

Keeping your toes cool probably. My Northwaves have loads of holes for ventilation.

I'd second that guess. The shoes I use for cross are studded - great for running up muddy banks, and look like this:

Have a look in the box and see if there are any studs rattling around the bottom.

Shimano shoes have an elliptical vent hole in the sole at the front of the shoe. This is normal.

The vent is a fabulous feature during those hot summer rides.

Yep, my Shimano R131s have the holes too, it's for cooling the feet in warm weather.

You'll need a pair of overshoes/toecovers if you use them before it gets to late spring/summer, I went out last Sunday morning (7.30am) without the overshoes on and I had to turn around after 3 miles, return home and put my overshoes on as my toes had gone numb with the cold draught.

The old saying is true, "Ne'er cast a clout 'til May be out"

    for those that don't know:
Clout is from an Old English word for cloth or clothing, and the saying was a reminder not to be too quick to take off the winter woollies before the chilly days of May were over.

I don't own any Shimano shoes but did try some on in my LBS when I bought some shoes and they were on the small side for the size. I am a size eight and a size nine shoe was a tight fit.

My Spesh Pro carbon's have a couple of vents in the bottom, but aren't much use when you use the BG insole as it doesn't have any cut outs in it....doh - that's the only stoopid thing about these fantastic shoes.

    Can mean either:
