I've got an old Rigid MTB that I fancy converting to a single speed.

I'm looking to do this as cheaply as possible, but will be changing
the rear cassette to a single,

so what I am looking for is a heads up on the parts I need and the best place to source them if my LBS doesn't have them.

thanks

I did this to a normal mtb for road use (pub) and changed:
front rings to a single ring - an old 44T i had lying around but for offroad it'll need to be something like a 32T to start with.
    on-one chain tensioner - £10
    on-one conversion kit - £10

I've stayed with a normal bike chain rather than a bmx/singlespeed chain because the chain line was nasty and the fatter chain was catching on the tensioner

    and other bits i needed
    rear v-brake - free from a mate
old XT cranks - free from a mate
schwalbe city jet tyres - £25 pair

turned out to be a lovely little thing, cutting my time riding to and from the pub by about 25%
