Sorry, haven't used the xpedo's myself.

The Richeys are the same as my Shimano XT SPDs on my MTB in terms of retention - plenty enough for me and I'm not gentle with them ;)

OK, thanks, I have ancient Shimano M515s on my hack and with the tension turned up they have great retention and work real well. Just a bit heavy. Think I will try the Richeys on the road bike.

I went for A520 SPDs but find it a pain that they are only one sided. Would proper road pedals flip over more easily?

They are usually weighted to hang the same way up, most of the time, so they are possibly easier to get used to flipping over and clipping into. Still, you will get the odd `arghhhh...where the heck is is the right side of the pedal?' moment.

I don't have a problem in daylight however I must admit I have found it more of a problem in the dark. Spent 5 mins trying to faff my foot in one morning but generally I find the ability to use the platform more important on the traffic light every few metres down the road roads which are frankly a pain to keep clipping in and out. My balance isn't that good for track standing though seen a wonderful example of it the other week. Guy first to hit the traffic light just turned the wheel sideways and rocked the bike very little back and forward and stayed up until the lights changed and just took off. Now that is something I am going to have to get the hang off. Very impressive.
