Chaps,

probably after a replacement for my gf, she currently has a 2006 specialized hardrock xc, non disc.

Really good bike, nicce and light, and she loves it.

However, she needs a bike to commute on, so one option I'm looking at is to turn her spesh into a commuter, and upgrade her MTB - looking around the £400-£500 budget.

She doesn't need a wsd frame by the way, she gets on fine with her spesh.

I'm rather taken by the Cindercone, and being a girl, she likes the colour!
My only slight concern is that being an AM bike, is it a bit heavy?

I know both the Cube and the Focus are light bikes, aethsetically the Focus is uber dull, the Cube doesn't have a lot going for it, but the white and black colour scheme seems to have had more thought put into it, and my other half likes it.

I know appearance isnt the be all, but i do believe that if you don't like the look of your steed, you won't want to get out and ride it as much.

So of the 3 bikes are there any opinions, and any others worth considering?

Thanks

Dan

My brother has just bought a Cube Attention Disc and he loves it, id argue that it is very good vfm.

rear mech is xt, front and shifters are deore, schwalbe tyres, ritchey finishing kit, hayes stroker ryde discs, and suntour xcm fork.....the only downside to the fork is that it is quite underdamped and so is not the greatest piece of kit, but for the price and the weight and the rest of the spec i feel this is to be expected, we rode cwmcarn yesterday and it coped fine, we are very happy with it.

i would reccommend the bike to anyone and theres also the joy of exclusivity with the Cube

If you need anymore info just pm me 8)

In this months What Mountain Magazine in the review section they rate the Focus Fat Boy and Cube attention disk very highly.

I have seen the cube in the flesh and it looks stunning. The finishing of it looks amazing. But like mentioned above the fork is not very good.

The reason why the Cube is so cheap is the frame. Although it is light the frame is a little dated and that is why the price is down. Remember if you went for a Trek or Giant etc at this pice range you would be getting a great frame and then you could upgrade components over time.

Kona cindercone 2007 was a bit overpriced at RRP, but better now its reduced.

    Seen this:

Only one size though, and not easy to test them out, which will be a good idea. Its not really a AM bike either, its just a 'trail' bike like the others you mention.

The only gripe I have with the Cube is the fork - is a bottom rung suntour with no damping and is short on travel.

    Thanks chaps for your replies,

Didn't realise the CC was overpriced at rrp, I have seen the 07 new for £450-£500, but in limited sizes.

Thanks for the feedback on the cube, bugger the forks let it down, as replacing them puts it up into a whole new price bracket, and your better off just spending more in the first place :?

Very difficult, will have to do some more trawling me thinks, and go and visit some shops that have the cube in stock.

If it was my £500 (Well it probably will be) I would likely go for a GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc, that looked pretty good spec to me, and quite tasty to boot.

What about if we were to push the envelope to around £550 - any gems that spring out?

How about the (here i go again reccommending Cube!) Cube Acid? it has the spec of the Attention but with a better fork, Rock Shox Dart i think, unsure of the exact model though. Its currently for sale at £530 at most places that stock them e.g CRC.

I've been looking at this price point and am coming down in favour of a Triad 3

The frame Merida wom seem to be respected, abd the Tora 302 fork is as good as you'll get at the price.
